with the Family

Winter Vacation in the USA, Day 8.

We’re spending our holiday in the States – first time for the boys – including Los Angeles and Orange County, Las Vegas, and Grand Canyon – the farthest (distance), longest (duration), and most complicated (itinerary) trip that we’ve ever taken.

Vegas, baby!

ACCOMMODATIONS

For the first night, we’re staying at the Luxor, just for the novelty of sleeping in a pyramid.

What a dump.

SHOW

From the entire itinerary, I was looking most forward to The Beatles Love by Cirque du Soleil.   I’ve wanted to see the show since it was first produced in 2006.   The boys, who are Beatle fans and intimately familiar with the soundtrack album, were also giddy with anticipation.

I managed to get through a Strawberry Fields, a Yellow Tangerine, and a Dr Robert’s Tea before curtain time.

It was phenomenal.  Even if not for the visuals on stage, the aural clarity, volume, and multi-dimensionality of the music was a glorious experience – actually made me feel high.

Not a single item in the store that I didn’t want to buy.

DINNER

Joe’s is an American seafood restaurant.  According to the website, the business was started in 1913 on Joe and Jennie’s front porch.  Now three locations: Las Vegas, Chicago, and Washington DC.  Specializes in crab, notably stone crab.

As per the menu: Fresh stone crabs are found in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. They are hand-harvested, one claw at a time, and thrown back to the sea.  Maybe that makes for a more sustainable industry, but seems kinda mean to the crabs – how many times in a lifetime does a crab have to go through the painful indignity of getting a limb torn off and having to grow it back?

At one point during the service, our server asked us where we were visiting from.  We mentioned Korea and the Philippines.  With great enthusiasm, she told us of a trip that she’d taken to Asia last year, including to both Korea and the Philippines, and the various food experiences that she’d had.  Later, DJ remarked that he had never seen a server talk with customers at such a level of … equality. I told him that’s the way it should always be, no matter who, no matter where.

Florida Stone Crab Claws (3.5): sweet – and easy to eat – but served cold (I prefer crab when it’s still hot and the juices are flowing).

The food was awesome.  Best meal that I’ve had in recent memory.

Grilled Seafood Platter (3.5): the jumbo shrimp, lobster tail, scallops were perfectly grilled to provide just the right touch of char to enhance their inherent flavors.

Grilled Alaskan Halibut (3.5): charred lemon vinaigrette delivered a tangy counterpoint to the rich fillet of the halibut, my favorite fish for grilling.

Vegas, baby!

  1. Were the stone crabs served cold? How does the texture compare to other crabs you’ve tried?

Looks like an amazing time so far!
