Selling Out the Integrity of the Blog for Additional Hits, Part 3 (see previously 2.281 Bacon Tomato Deluxe)
This on-going series will feature unique items from international chain restaurants operating in the Korean market. Someday, I’ll go back and cross-reference prior posts on the same subject that were written before I’d made the conscious decision to pander.
Seriously, though, I’ve been really busy, and fast food does serve a purpose during such times
Spicy Tender Crispy is a sandwich from Burger King Korea. The dry dusted bun, the sickly slice of tomato, the scraps of iceberg lettuce, and the glob of spicy mayo (or whatever it is) were all predictable. But the chicken took me by surprise: instead of a processed patty of minced chicken like the ones found in most fast food chicken sandwiches, it was an actual boneless chicken thigh, skin included. One problem was that the breading was attached to the skin, which in turn didn’t adhere to the surface of the meat, making everything fall apart upon first bite. Even worse, while the deep-frying cooked the outer breading to a crisp, the skin underneath remained squishy and rubbery. I’m all for chicken skin when properly done, but not this. The skin did provide additional tenderness, but the thigh is juicy anyway, so the extra layer of fat was unnecessary.
Weird to name a sandwich with just 3 adjectives.
Judging by the 2 most recent releases each from Burger King Korea and McDonald’s Korea, they would appear to be engaged in a tit-for-tat competition. Garlic Steakhouse Burger (Burger King) vs. Grand Prime (McDonald’s). Spicy Tender Crispy (Burger King) vs. Shanghai Spice Chicken Burger Deluxe (McDonald’s). I don’t know who released what in which order. Burger King’s burger was not quite beefy enough, whereas, ironically, their chicken sandwich was a bit too much chicken. Thus, in my less-than-adamant opinion, McDonald’s wins by default on both counts.
