Throughout this November, I am challenging myself to eat 30 dishes from 30 countries over the course of 30 consecutive days.

Paraguay is the 8th country.

Empanada is a Spanish dish.  It’s bread/pastry typically stuffed with meat/cheese/vegetables and fried/baked.  While variations can be found throughout the world, the form is especially common/popular in Latin American countries, such as Paraguay.

The empanadas were okay.  We ordered the set of 6 as an appetizer, only to find that each came so big – nearly double the size of the wax sample in the display case – that the three of us could barely finish it all.  Normally, I wouldn’t complain about too much food, but I’d been hoping to try more items from the menu.  As the 6 versions were essentially the same – cheese plus something else – we grew tired of them halfway through.  4,000 won each, or 24,000 won for the set.  Now that I look at it, I see that there’s no price incentive for getting the whole set.

San Filipe, an Argentine malbec, light and fruity, a bit overpriced at 30,000 won.
