Jeyuk Bokkeum

2.5

at Mijane Chakhan Sikdang

-Bokjeong, Sujeong, Seongnam, Gyeonggi, Republic of Korea-

with W and IZ

This year, the KAIAC (Korean-American Interscholastic Activities Conference) badminton tournament was held at SIS.

The front gate, which didn’t exist back in my day.
At right, the New Building, which didn’t exist back in my day.
The Main Building, which was the only building back in my day.

As team captain, DJ was proud to host the event and play his final match on home turf.

As far as I could tell, we were the only parents from SIS in the stands.

DJ and his partner had advanced to the mixed doubles finals, so we went to cheer them on.  They placed 4th.

During a boys singles match, SIS defeated SFS in a disputed call, prompting the SFS player to throw his racket and cause a racket, leading certain SIS players to get agitated over the poor sportsmanship – DJ stepped in to make the peace.

Mijane Chakhan Sikdang is a Korean restaurant.  Specializes in gamjatang, as well as samgyeopsal, judging by the signage.  Open 24 hrs.  Apparently, the business has undergone several name changes over the years: “Mijane Chakhan Sikdang” is how it’s listed on Naver, but the current storefront sign says “Seonhan Sikdang,” while another on-line listing shows “Seonhan Jeongyuk Sikdang.”

Located 202m from SIS.
11,000 for jeyuk bokkeum ain’t cheap, but the portion was generous.
Happy to discover a banchan buffet with an impressive range of options.

At midday, before DJ’s quarterfinal match, W and IZ and I went out for lunch.  We settled on Mijane/Seonhan/Chakhan.

Banchan [clockwise from top right]: ggakdugi + kimchi + dotori muk + salada + kongnamul + oi muchim + zucchini bokkeum.
The food was okay.  I look forward to going back someday to try the baekban.
