By the end of Day 1 at the 2025 Seoul International Book Fair (see generally 16.164 Wild Mushroom Pizza), I sensed trouble. We had brought our entire stock PRH titles, including 2 new series purchased to be sold for the first time at SIBF: Penguin Archive and Vintage Collector’s Classics. Combined, they accounted for 60% of sales on Day 1. Unfortunately, I had woefully underestimated their popularity and so had not ordered sufficient stock, now projected to sell out by the end of Day 3 (SIBF runs for 5 days). So, I made a snap decision to ask staff to contact Kyobo and buy out their entire supply of both series, which they were graciously willing to give us – perhaps the first time in the history of the Korean book industry that one retailer has bought so much from another retailer at this scale. But even with the added stock, I’m doubt that it will last until Day 5.
TB, head of publishing house Honford Star, had various meetings at SIBF throughout the day.
Afterwards, we went out for dinner and drinks at The Taco Booth NYC.
Although my first impression of the food had been positive (see most recently 16.163 Birria Tacos), this time I was quite disappointed. The Pig Out Nachos were sprinkled with sugar, making them both grainy and sweet – after initial nibbles, they went untouched. The Wings were also weirdly sweet – also untouched. The fries were good, as were the birria tacos.
I doubt that I’ll be back, unless in the mood for birria tacos and nothing else.
