Personal Deviation + Mission to Nadi + Personal Deviation : Day 3 (see previously 6.101 Bula Shrimp).

Arrived yesterday morning, here through next Friday to attend a conference — more details to come.

This is my second visit to Fiji (see most recently 5.180 Mahi Mahi with Snake Beans…).

Sitar, a Thai/Indian restaurant where I had dinner, featuring dishes like this burnt lobster, was disappointing, so much so that I don’t want to go into it any further.

After last night’s epic kava session, I fell asleep around midnight and didn’t open my eyes until 1800 this evening.  Even then, though wide awake, getting up was a monumental struggle.  Neither lassitude nor lethargy in the traditional sense, no headache or other hangover effects, just an utter lack of will to function.  If not for an overarching desire to maximize the opportunities for food exploration during my limited stay here, I would’ve stayed in bed for at least another 18 hours.  This may explain “Fiji time.”

On the way back to the hotel, I stopped by this cluster of food carts on the street.

The set-up.

An egg, marinated lamb chop, and lamb sausage — grilled on an iron slab in a pool of oil.

Topped with a generous squeeze of BBQ sauce.

As a reward for my efforts, I had the rare privilege of experiencing Fijian street eats.

Alas, the food itself wasn’t all that great.  The only good part was the egg, nicely crisp on the underside.  The chop was a tad dry in texture, gamy in flavor.  The sausage was unpleasantly mealy, too much filler.  The cucumber and lettuce were flimsy, wilted.  The cassava was objectively okay, but not my thing.  Oh well.

  1. sitar=what a shame…; i think i had dinner at sitar in Nadi; we had indian cuisines, which were objectively okay, but not my kind of thing ;P
