LUNCH

IZ’s school hosted a family event today, which included sporting activities and BBQ lunch.

Congratulations to the staff for their heroic efforts to feed a couple hundred families in one go.

I went with the chicken, which had the components of a burger – (overcooked) meat + (unmelted) cheese + (French’s) mustard + (cold) bun – but fell short of being a burger.

Eh.

DINNER

We invited DK, one of IZ’s friends, over to our place to hang out for the afternoon.

As I must’ve mentioned in at least one of the countless posts on mul naeng myeon, the nature of the noodles demand that they be cooked to perfection: a few seconds too short leaves them undercooked and tough, a few seconds too long leaves them overcooked and mushy.

Afterwards (on the way to taking him home), we went to dinner at Jinmi Pyongyang Naeng Myeon (he lives nearby).

One visual cue is whether the noodles hold together in a firm ball, which only works when the noodles are properly cooked.

DK’s first experience with Pyongyang-style MNM.  He said that it was the best MNM that he’d ever tasted.

Whereas Hamheung-style noodles come apart only when snipped with scissors, Pyongyang-style noodles let loose with a gentle tug of chopsticks.

Small world, we soon realized that DK’s father is a very close high school friend of IZ’s uncle (W’s brother) best.
