with JS

Out of the blue, JS called and proposed that we go out for dinner and drinks.  For over 5 years, we’ve been living next door to each other (about 10 minutes by car), yet this was the first time that we’ve met up near home; all other encounters have been at the cabin (see most recently 16.023 Lunar New Year Spread).

He had an ulterior motive.  In light of the fallout from that last gathering, I had vowed never to participate in future events, at least anything involving all 3 generations with the entire extended family, which I’ve come to realize is just too much work/stress for everyone (i.e., me, my mother); at the time, my mother had agreed.  But to nobody’s surprise, as Chuseok soon approaches, she’s started to change her tune: “Well, you know, I’ve been thinking, and it’s not like we can just stop altogether, especially when so many of us are looking forward to it….”  In fact, I don’t believe that anyone’s really looking forward to it, certainly not every part of the whole thing or every person involved.  So, JS spent a lot of time tonight trying to persuade me to come despite all the negatives, promising that I wouldn’t have to lift a finger, just to give him someone to drink with.  I’ll think about it – in any case, W will be out of town that week, DJ is gone, and IZ is excommunicado, so it would only be me.

Ka Va Lan Single Malt Whisky Solist Ex-Bourbon Cask (2.5): a recent acquisition from Taipei – turned out to be a bit too intense and sweet for what we were eating (the restaurant allows for 2 bottle without charging corkage).

Try Every Italianish Eatery in Wirye (TEIEW)

The steak was okay.  Like all the cuts at this place, it didn’t quite look standard: never seen a tenderloin served in 2 separate pieces.   Absurdly small portion for the price (180 grams at 35,000), second most expensive cut by weight, even as the only Australian beef on the menu.  Anyway, the food wasn’t that important.
