Pyeongyang Naengmyeon

3.0

at Hyangdongga

-Hannam, Yongsan, Seoul, Republic of Korea-

solo

Hyangdongga is a Korean restaurant.  Specializes in Pyeongyang-style naengmyeon.  Original location in Nonhyeon, now with a second branch in Hannam.

Located at Hannam-dong Ogeori.

On my way back to the office from a meeting at YISS, I was about to make a left turn at the intersection when I saw the sign for “Pyeongyang Naengmyeon” so instead pulled what may have been an illegal u-turn into the restaurant’s valet parking station.

50,000 for a plate of 1++ Hanwoo suyuk – whereas the amount of the serving isn’t specified, I’m assuming it to be very small.

Applying the rating rubric used in my Seoul-Searching project (see SSPYSP):

TOPPINGS: Sliced beef shank + pickled radish + white cabbage kimchi.  Kinda boring.

BROTH: A hint of sweetness, soy sauce.  Little beef flavor.

NOODLES: Firm, a bit too dense.  Decent buckwheat flavor, but somewhat bland.

Something about it feels a bit short, like maybe the absence of egg, but generally a respectable MNM.  Perhaps not worth going out of my way, but if it’s on the way, sure why not.  When we move back to Oksu, hopefully in the spring of 2026, this will be really close to home, perhaps the nearest destination for MNM.

Pricey at 16,000 won.
