Book Fair at Humphreys High School: Day 3 of 4
-
- Day 1 (17.051 Fall-Off-The-Bone Ribs)
- Day 2 (17.052 Roast Beef Classic + Curly Fries)
- Day 3 (17.053 Chicken Gyro)
- Day 4 (17.054 Beef & Broccoli)
In Pyeongtaek. Supervised a book fair at Humphreys High School on the United States Army Garrison Humphreys aka Camp Humphreys: set up Wednesday, sales Thursday and Friday, break down today. Staying on an extra day to hang out with SIS alums living nearby. Very excited, not only for the book fair – our first ever at Humphreys – but for the food opportunities on and around post.
LUNCH
When the stock team arrived for the break down, I took them to lunch at the food court. They wanted something authentically American, something unavailable on the outside, so I steered them to Arby’s, which we’d enjoyed at dinner last night.

This time, however, I made the mistake of ordering the Beef ‘N Cheddar – supposedly the cheeseburger equivalent to the standard Roast Beef – which came not with actual cheddar cheese but cheese sauce, like Cheez Wiz. So gross.
I also made the mistake of ordering the Double portion, thus doubling the grossness.

As noted yesterday, the prices are deceptively expensive. We had the same Beef ‘N Cheddar Double Meal at $12.19 each x 4 = $48.76 = 73,000 won.
ACCOMMODATIONS
After seeing everyone off, I drove into town. The neighborhood beyond the main gate to Humphreys is referred to, at least by Americans, as The Ville.

After checking into the hotel, I met up with JW to begin the longest night out in recent memory, perhaps the longest in GMTD history.
DINNER
Nom Beer Company is an American pub. The menu offers burgers, pizzas, tacos, wings, fries – like every other dining venue on post. Owned/operated by graduates of SAHS (Seoul American High School – the former high school at Yongsan Garrison).

When we arrived at 18:30, the place was packed with soldiers.
They were all eating burgers. While Koreans can be very narrow-minded where food is concerned, Americans are apparently just as bad, at least a certain type of American. I suspect that a lot of servicemen come from small towns in middle America, where burgers, pizzas, tacos, wings, fries are the only options, so that’s what they eat growing up, and that’s what they eat as grown-ups.

DRINKS
From that point, we hopped from place to place.

2AM SNACK
My Corner is an “international fast food” restaurant. No surprise, it offers burgers, tacos, wings, fries, no pizza, as well as gyros. Open late on weekends.

Got back to the hotel at 03:00.
I remember very little, except that I met some nice people, got drunk, had a great time. Looking forward to coming back.
