Dweji Gukbap Jeongsik

As noted in yesterday’s circuit tour of the national capital region (see generally 17.111 Spaghetti Assassina), we will be hosting a booth at the Seoul Outdoor Library, starting this Friday – stay tuned for more details.

With only 3 days left to prepare (set-up is Thursday), I went to Seoul Plaza to conduct the first “ocular inspection” of the site (as we called it at WHO) and meet with the organizers to discuss final details – all of this should’ve been done weeks/months ago, but the project had come up at the last minute.

On the left is the building that once housed Seoul City Hall (side view), built in 1926 during the Japanese occupation; on the right is the current Seoul City Hall, opened in 2012 – the juxtaposition of old vs new reminds me of the Louvre.
Now the Seoul Metropolitan Library – our booth will occupy the VIP space directly in front of the entrance.
Seoul Plaza, as seen upon exiting the library.

Baekmudong is a Korean restaurant.  Specializing in dweji gukbap.

Located 209 m from the library’s front entrance.

After my business with the library was over, I had dinner before going home.

Initially attracted to the offer of mil myeon.

The food was excellent.  For starters, the jeongsik option (full set) came with a steamer of sliced pork, exquisitely tender and sweet, served on a bed of bean sprouts with a dipping sauce of minced garlic + gochujang.  The gukbap, with more of the same pork, was deeply meaty in flavor without a hint of pork funk that cheaper gukbap can often have.  Reminded me of that amazing experience in Busan (see generally 16.190 Suyuk (Assorted Boiled Meat Slices)), where dweji gukbap orginates.

The handmade sundae, with and without blood, were also fantastic.
Already perfectly balanced, further enhanced with chili paste.
