Eohyang Gaji

2.0

at Taetae

-Oksu, Seongdong, Seoul, Republic of Korea-

with DJ

Taetae is a Korean-Chinese restaurant.   Aspiring to rise above the typical neighborhood delivery joint with a handful of non-standard dishes, but essentially still a jjajang/jjambbong joint.

Located 323 m from Oksu Station (Exit 5) – next door to Oksu Hwadeok Pizza (see most recently 17.137 Sicilian Pesto Pasta (+ Sourdough)).
The rundown nature of the building and unadorned entrance, giving way to an elegantly minimalistic interior, impart something of a speakeasy vibe.

Eohyang Gaji is a Korean-Chinese dish.  Deep-fried strips of eggplant, tossed in eohyang (yuxiang) (fish fragrance).  A dish often found at Korean-Chinese restaurants trying to be modern.

Heukcho Tangsuyuk (2.0): too sweet – and what’s with the peanuts and raw onions?

Meh.  Nicely deep-fried, but the sauce was weirdly tangy.  Despite what the photo would suggest, it was a huge portion, which we left more than half on the plate.

I highly doubt that we’ll return.
