While shopping at E-Mart, W suggested that we buy a DIY seafood package for dinner. They were on sale at 8,800 won apiece, which put me in a bind between my enthusiasm for bargain food in general and my dubiety towards bargain seafood in particular. In fact, I had a bad experience with a similar product a few years back (see 1.150 Haemul Jjigae). But the promise of convenience was overwhelming in my tired state. The package included a small octopus, a couple shrimp, pair of crab legs, a handful of fish eggs/innards, a variety of clams, along with a packet of maeun tang sauce: just add water.

Never one to keep it simple, even when tired, I started off making an anchovy stock. I added a few slices of dubu and radish, both standard for the dish. I also I arranged everything in a paella pan, using about half the sauce packet to keep the heat down for the kid and compensating with a dash of salt, brought it to a boil for a few minutes, and topped it off with a liberal amount of crown daisies, also standard. Not bad. Not good. No regrets.
