Mochiritofu

at Tanosii

Tanosii is a Japanese restaurant/pub – i.e., izakaya. Specializes in small appetizer-like dishes, good for pairing with booze.

We discovered the place driving around looking for something to eat.

Not exactly child-friendly but the early hour provided an opportunity to enjoy a quick/quiet family meal before the grown-ups started showing up.

The food was excellent. The small portions and reasonable prices allowed us to try a wide range of dishes. They were all properly prepared, nicely presented. Looking forward to future visits.

Goma Tofu is a Japanese dish. An alternative type of tofu made with ground sesame seeds and potato starch. Associated with shojin ryori, a style of vegan dining practiced by Buddhist monks in Japan. In Korea, the dish – for reasons that I haven’t been able to discern – is called “mochiritofu.”

Tanoshii’s rendition was quite nice. The menu describes it as “Packed with milk flavor, Japanese pudding? Tofu!” The texture was dense and creamy, almost like cheese cake. The flavor was somewhat nutty, which could be interpreted as milky, given the white appearance. Intriguing – I’d have to try the dish a couple more times to determine how much I like it. Reminded me of a dish that I’d experienced in Japan – in light of what I know now, perhaps that was also goma tofu (see 10.064 Cream Cheese in Tofu Goo).
