Ski Vacation 2023 (Day 1 of 3)

In Yongpyeong.  Here for 2 days of skiing.  DJ with his friends, IZ on his own (I am sidelined this time due to extreme sciatica).

Located in Tower Plaza.

Efes Kebab is a Turkish restaurant.  Specializes in kebab, chicken and lamb, offered in various quick-fix dishes.   Part of a chain with a handful of locations scattered (seemingly at random) across the country.

Also serves ice cream (more on that tomorrow).

Still an exceedingly rare thing in Korea, the only other time that I can recall encountering kebab in Korea outside of Itaewon was in Yongpyong back in 2012 (see 3.040 Chicken Kebab), which seems like a freakishly odd coincidence, unless that thing eventually turned into this thing.

DID YOU KNOW: Ephesus was a city in Ancient Greece, now part of present-day Turkey.  Famous for the Temple of Artemis, built in 550 BCE, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.  The city is called Efes, in Turkish.

Mise en Place.

DID YOU KNOW: Founded in 1969, Efes Beverage Group is the largest producer of beer in Turkey, commanding approximately 80% of the market, 11th largest in the world.  Efes Pilsener is the company’s flagship product.  The original brewery was located in Izmir, near Ephesus.

Efes Pilsener

With such a long history of drinking beer, I’m finding it impossible to believe that Efes was my first encounter with Turkish beer.

It was fine.

Pide (see generally 9.056 Pide)!

So excited to have a non-Korean dining option, especially kebab.

Forgot to take a photo of the wrap before the first bite.

The Special Chicken Kebab was great.  Juicy, tasty chicken.  Classic mix of veg, including tomato + chilies + white cabbage + onion + pickles.   Topped with garlic sauce + chili sauce.  Wrapped in a thick, fluffy, chewy pide, made in-house.  Possibly the best individual item that I’ve had to eat at a Korean ski resort.
