On the first Saturday of May, Free Comic Book Day is an annual event held at comic book stores, primarily in the United States.  For the event, publishers create exclusive promotional books featuring short bits of content, intended to encourage purchase of the main titles.

Technically, Free Comic Book Day was yesterday, but it’s often held over the full weekend.

The guy in the green shirt is JC, proprietor of the store.

Just a few weeks ago, I was introduced to author-illustrator Ryan Estrada through the International School of Busan (ISB), where he did an author visit and book signing in the midst of a remote book fair that we had supported.   Along with the other authors that I’ve been corralling this semester, we’ll soon be collaborating to promote his books on our website.

Banned Book Club, co-written with his wife, based on her experiences as a college student, is arguably his most famous work.

In the meantime, I was happy to facilitate a book sale and signing with Ryan during Free Comic Book Day.

IZ, getting his copies signed.

As we were supplying the books on a consignment arrangement with DCC, I stuck around for the entire day.  Alas, turnout was abysmally low, probably a combination of the rainy weather and the long weekend (Children’s Day) (people often go out of town to travel).  But as a result, I had plenty of time to talk with Ryan, get to know him, and discuss ideas for future collaborations.

DCC now offers 4 brews on tap: 1 American + 3 Korean – I usually get Bud (see for example 15.065 Fish Sandwich), because I prefer a crisp lager to heavier ales.
Hand & Malt Pale Ale (2.5): I was enticed by the offer of a free glass.

The chili dog was hit and miss.  The homemade chili, topped with shredded cheddar cheese, was excellent.  However, the hotdog itself was a Korean sausage, which I found to be somewhat bland, though generous in size.  But with the tortilla chips, I enjoyed the meal overall.
