with the Family, DJ’s friends

Summer Holiday in USA (Day 5 of 11)

In the San Francisco Bay Area.  With the Family.  Their first time in Northern California.  The immediate objective is to escort DJ and three of his friends to compete in the finals of a global logic competition at Stanford University, while taking advantage of the opportunity to show the family my hometown/region, including San Francisco, Silicon Valley, and Berkeley, and visit my best friend Hahn, who lives in Los Altos, maybe even drop by my childhood home in Saratoga.  The itinerary is packed, nearly every hour scheduled with activities.  Stay tuned.

After three nights at a hotel in downtown San Francisco, next 4 nights at a rented house in Redwood City.

LUNCH + SHOPPING

While DJ and his friends stayed at the house to prepare for the competition tomorrow (IZ also stayed in, to do nothing), W and I spent the afternoon shopping at San Francisco Premium Outlets, which is in Livermore, 65 km east of San Francisco.

Located in the food court.

On my own for lunch, I was very happy to indulge in food-court American-Chinese food, even though we had dinner reservations for strip-mall American-Chinese food.

Chicken & Mushrooms (2.0) + Mapo Tofu (2.0) + Fried Rice (2.0)

It was deliciously crappy, as hoped.

DINNER

Crouching Tiger is a Chinese restaurant.  Serves mainstream cuisine, a mix of Mandarin, Cantonese, Sichuanese, and of course American.

Located at 2640 Broadway, about 3 km from the house.
By the time we left, the place would be packed.
Party of 7.

The food was mediocre across the board.  So sad that another Chinese dinner fell short (see also 15.173 Sauteed Pea Sprouts with Garlic).

Mushu Pork (2.5)
Don’t know why they can’t make these pancakes in Korea (see for example 11.354 Stir-Fried Rice with Crab Meat Soup; 11.329 Mushu Pork).

Beyond quality, the other boys seemed confused by the nature of the food (“This isn’t Chinese food!”), as they had never experienced anything like it, not even hot & sour soup (“Why is this so sour?”), which is odd because all of them have lived abroad, including in America.

My fortune: “Your many hidden talents will become obvious to those around you.”
I love that Chinese restaurants in America are still using these.

Only $160.16, just $22.88 per person – best value yet!
