Setting Up Shop (Pik-a-Book): Day 1 of 4

In Busan.  Here to oversee set-up of our new store – Pik-a-Book – located in the Village de Ananti, as teased in a post on our recon mission a couple months back (see generally 16.190 Suyuk (Assorted Boiled Meat Slices).  If all goes according to schedule, we should be up and running by Saturday.  Returning Sunday.

A pair of staff had departed Seoul in the morning and arrived at the resort around noon, proceeding to unload the trucks, transfer everything from the loading zone to the store, and begin to assemble furniture – without me, because I’d missed the train and had to take a later one, arriving at the resort around 1400.  By 1600, furniture done, the boys were totally exhausted, so I called it a day.  They went back to Seoul on the evening train, while I took a taxi to the hotel.

HOTEL

Located 3 km from Ananti.
Not bad for 70,000 per night.

Songjeong is a small beach town, part of the famous Haeundae district (but not the main/famous Haeudae beach), about 3.5 km from Ananti.

My view of the beach, as seen from the left side of the building.
The main drag, heading west.

SNACK

Ggot Dweji Bunsik is a Korean snack shop.  Offers a limited range of snack items, including odeng.

Located 216 m from the hotel.

1630.  Not at all hungry, I started with a small snack, while watching the beachgoers and enjoying the setting sun.

1,500.

Went back to the hotel to rest.

PRE-DINNER

Samwon Myeonok is a Korean restaurant.  Offers a handful of noodle dishes, mandu, and bossam.

Located 248 m from the hotel, across from Songjeong Station.
Despite the claim of “suje,” the mandu are not handmade.
While the signage boasts a 30-year heritage, the digs are obviously new.

1800.  Still not very hungry, I dropped by the restaurant for the obligatory when-in-Busan bowl of milmyeon.

Having now experienced milmyeon at 5 restaurants (4 Busan, 1 Jeju), I can confidently say that the dish isn’t such a big deal, despite the hype as a must-try thing when in Busan.  Essentially naengmyeon with different noodles.  Always pretty good, never that great.  Next time, I won’t go out of my way to eat it.

Went back to the hotel to rest.

DINNER

Wolggakdugi is a Korean restaurant.  Specializes in fish, grilled or stewed.

Located 13 m from the hotel, literally next door.
After the dinner crowd, before the late-night drinkers.

2030.  Now hungry (and drunk), I went out again for real food.

Banchan (2.5): respectable spread.
Godeungeo Gui (2.5): with rice and soup, a very well-balanced meal.
