Living Aboard the Mola Mola: Day +1 of 7

In transit: Ambon > Jakarta > Incheon.  Completed a 7-day liveaboard scuba diving trip: sailing across the Banda Sea on board the MSY Mola Mola, while diving, eating, drinking, sleeping (i.e., “living aboard”) the boat.  The Banda Sea is one of four seas surrounding the archipelago of Maluku Islands aka the Spice Islands (where European powers fought wars during the 16th-17th centuries to gain control of the islands’ abundant spices, such as nutmeg, cloves, and mace).  Failed in our primary objective to sight schools of hammerhead sharks.  (Two prior liveaboard trips were both to the Maldives aboard the MV Adora (see previously 14.062 Sautéed Sword Lettuce (Three Times) (2023) (9.191 Grilled Beef Tenderloin (2018).)  My first time ever in Indonesia – who knows if I’ll ever return? – I’d arrived a few days early to maximize the visit and hang out in Jakarta.

Based on the food, I would definitely love to come back.

After lunch, we disembarked the boat and went to the airport.

AFTERNOON SNACK

Pattimura International Airport

Lunch on the flight from Ambon to Jakarta, aboard Garuda Indonesia GA 647.

EARLY DINNER

Arriving in Jakarta more than 3 hours prior to my flight to Incheon, I had time to explore the airport.

Located on the mezzanine level at Terminal 3.

Curious to see if Burger King had anything uniquely Indonesian, I was very pleased to find a localized chicken dish.

Nusantara Chicken is an Indonesian dish.  Chicken is marinated in a spice/aromatic blend – some combination of shallots + garlic + lemongrass + turmeric + galangal + candlenuts + chilies – then either grilled or deep-fried, served with rice and sambal.

Sambal Ijo (green sambal): distinct vegetative flavor, like salsa verde.

It was good.  The chicken was crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside.  Nicely seasoned but no discernible spice.  But as ever, sambal made the dish.   A nice simple meal to close out the trip.

EVENING SNACK

As a passenger on Korean Air, I was invited to the Saphire Plaza Premium Lounge.

Located on Level 1 of Terminal 3.
Better than the Garuda Indonesia lounge (see for comparison 16.280 Buntut Goreng).
The bar.
Alas, spirits are not free, costing IDR 135,000 (about USD 8) per shot, though beer and wine are on the house.
DIY noodle station: very impressive.
Chicken Biryani + Biryani Rice

Though disappointed by the bar situation, the local food options were quite nice.

LATE DINNER

On board Korean Air KE 628.

The window seat provides more privacy, more leg room, more storage space, and an additional shelf to place empty glasses/plates for the flight attendants to clear.
Why duty free stores shouldn’t sell these smaller bottles.

As ever, the food on Korean Air, even Prestige Class, left a lot to be desired.

Beef Salad Canape with Mustard Sauce (2.5)
Smoked Duck with Mango Salsa (1.0) + Garang Asam Soup (3.0)
Stir-Fried Beef Tenderloin with Oyster Sauce (2.0)

Anyway, it’s good to be going home.
