On any overseas trip, I try to bring back as many food items as possible, especially things that I can use to recreate local dishes.

Unfortunately, my food shopping in Indonesia was limited to the airport duty free store on the way out, where pickings were slim. (While I did have access to a huge supermarket in Jakarta on the first few days of the trip, my luggage was already pushing the weight allowance for the domestic flight that I had to take to Ambon.)

According to Gemini: “Munik is a well-known and large Indonesian brand, particularly for its packaged, ready-to-cook seasonings. It is recognized for targeting urban consumers who have limited time but want to cook authentic Indonesian food. The brand name, which combines the Indonesian words ‘mudah’ (easy) and ‘nikmat’ (delicious), reflects its core value proposition: making Indonesian cooking convenient and tasty.”

As the sauce began to concentrate, it became unbearably salty. I took it as far as I could, but fell way short of achieving the proper texture/color (see for example 16.286 Beef Rendang). And no, it didn’t taste very good either – odd fishy flavor. The underlying beef was edible with the sauce was scraped off. Very disappointing.
