In the mid-1990s, the American TV network NBC had a thing called “Must See TV Thursday.” The 1994 lineup comprised 4 half-hour sitcoms, starting at 8PM: Mad About You, Friends (series premiere!), Seinfeld, Madman of the People, followed by a one-hour drama at 10PM: ER (series premiere!). Some of the sitcoms were swapped out over the years (can’t recall ever watching Madman of the People), but Friends/Seinfeld/ER anchored the lineup through 1998, when Seinfeld went off the air.
Every week, my friends gathered to tune in. We watched while eating takeout for dinner, each of us alternating turns to get the food, always Chinese, because the characters on Seinfeld seemed to eat a lot of Chinese – we called the ritual “S&C (Seinfeld & Chinese).” My go-to order was chicken with broccoli.
For no particular reason, a proper rendition of chicken with broccoli has never been featured on GMTD (but see 13.266 Chicken & Broccoli in Brown Gravy), until now.
It was excellent. Chicken breasts, velveted. Broccolini, purchased at Shinsegae Market. White sauce, from the recipe on Made with Lau (see Why Chinese Restaurant Broccoli is Better). Much better than my beef with broccoli (see most recently 17.119 Beef & Broccoli).
