with Hahn, Jenny, and Hahn’s mother
Hahn’s father was taken to the hospital a couple days ago, with what turned out to be a severe blood infection of some sort, as yet undiagnosed. But the prognosis is so grim, apparently, that Hahn and Jenny jumped on the next available flight to be by his side for what is considered the inevitable. Sochin (see most recently 17.226 Premium Seafood Trio in Dried Scallop Sauce), who happened to be in town on a social visit, is now preparing for the worst.
(Future me, writing this post 9 days later, is relieved to report that Professor Lee’s condition has stabilized, though he remains in the hospital, unlikely to be discharged anytime soon. Hahn and Jenny are already back in the States. Sochin is staying on.)

One less thing to worry about, I picked them up at the airport (can’t recall ever picking someone up at ICN) and took them straight to the hospital (Ajou University Hospital – Professor Lee was a tenured professor of public administration at Ajou University, where I was also a professor at the medical school for 10 years; in fact, Hahn’s mother, who was working in the hospital at the time, introduced me to the dean of the faculty who would eventually give me the job).
Afterwards, we went out for a quick dinner.
