The ultimate mixed blessing for a functioning alcoholic is having a close friend who owns a bar. Fortunately and/or unfortunately, I can’t take full advantage of the situation due to any number of reasons, the most important of which probably being that he doesn’t sell whisky (yet). Another factor is that consumption in excess of 2 drinks at the bar (Bundang), located on my commuter route and almost exactly midway between home (Seoul) and work (Suwon), would require hiring a designated driver and shelling out 30,000 won for him to take me home in my own car. That’d be cheaper than paying for the drinks, but I’m still paying for the drinks at this nascent phase in the business. And yes, health and getting home to the family and all that, too.
