At Costco a couple weeks ago, I was holding a jumbo-jar 2-fer pack of marinated artichoke hearts and debating whether I should buy them, when a woman asked me what artichokes tasted like. I found myself at a loss. It then occurred to me that describing most foods, especially vegetables, even the simplest of vegetables, are virtually impossible without a common frame of reference. Like try explaining cabbage to someone who’s never tried any variety of cabbage. Some foods defy description regardless.
Anyway, I bought the artichokes. I don’t really know what to do with them, so I’ve been eating them straight out of the bottle.

Tonight, I had the inspiration of pairing them with roast turkey breast, another Costco item that I also tend to eat plain, along with one of my favorite techniques of wrapping stuff in lettuce leaves. The crisp lettuce, the savory turkey, and the tart artichokes – it worked.
