Ika Karaage

4.0

at Doki Doki

-Songpa, Seoul, Republic of Korea-

with KHJ + PHY

Doki Doki is a Japanese restaurant.  It’s an izakaya, offering a range of pub grub.

Cold sake – I’m wondering how warm sake became the default in the States.
Customers get to choose their own sake cups, which is kinda fun, but maybe a bit risky (hygiene-wise) in keeping them out in the open.

With just a handful of posts left in Cycle 2, I was glad to arrange a dinner with my two closest friends at school.  KHJ is a master at picking restaurants.

Among the complimentary appetizers, the wasabi-mayo noodles (on the left) were particularly good.
Octopus Sashimi Salad in Ponzu Dressing
Agedashi Tofu: the solitary misfire, which featured a syrupy sauce that hardened like amber after a few minutes.
Oyster Tempura: runner-up for best dish of the evening, this exquisite dish proved that the restaurant’s frymaster knows his craft.
Barbecued Teriyaki Meatball Skewers

With just the one exception, everything that we ordered was on target.  The dishes were conceptually sound, flawlessly balanced and seasoned, superbly executed, and thoughtfully presented.  The ika karaage was probably the best deep-fried squid of any kind that I’ve ever had.
