Back in the day, my mother occasionally made “Russian Soup.” Chunks of beef + cabbage + carrots in a light broth flavored with ketchup. I recall that it wasn’t all that bad.
A quick internet search suggests that Russian cabbage soup schi might’ve been the inspiration, though no recipes that I’ve seen include ketchup as an ingredient.
Alternatively, ketchup soup is also a thing, though not necessarily a Russian thing.
As I was free-styling an American-style chicken noodle soup this evening, the broth turned out kinda bland, so I added ketchup. Not bad. I could’ve achieved a similar effect with tomato paste + salt + sugar.
The dish had nothing to do with current events in Ukraine.
