At SFS to support the author visit with Neal Shusterman, who was at the school for three days, ending today.

Q&A with middle schoolers.

A month ago, we’d imported a selection of his works – we already had a few of his works, including the Scythe series – and sold them to students through the Secondary Library in the weeks leading up to the event; for the book signing session on the final day, we brought remaining stock for a pop-up sale, right next to the signing table.

The set-up.

As explained to me by SFS’s librarian, some writers who do author visits are great speakers but have boring books, while some writers are boring speakers but have great books, but Neal is both a great speaker and has great books.

By the end, we sold everything but one copy.

After the middle school session wrapped, students ran to the library to buy the books and get them signed.

Obviously, without books for immediate purchase, the book signing wouldn’t have been as highly attended, and the event overall wouldn’t have been as meangful.

The line ran out the door.

More important, I got Neal to agree to collaborate with us to promote his books on our website to our national audience – part of a new marketing strategy to work with authors (see most recently 15.049 Dinner).

His most famous book is Scythe.

For lunch, just prior to the book signing, the cheeseburger was excellent, as before (see most recently 14.309 Jalapeño Cheddar Double Smash Burger).

The egg yolk was anticipated to burst, but it exploded.
