Dubu Jeyuk

Baeknyeonok is a Korea restaurant.  Specializes in dubu.  Founded 1991.

The original building, located across the street from Seoul Arts Center.
The annex building, next door.
Packed at 1732, presumably with customers grabbing a bite before the 7pm show, like us.

This place, independently founded/owned/operation, is the antithesis of the franchise chain.  As soon as I saw the menu, I began to rub my hands together in gleeful anticipation.

Alas, the food was disappointing.  The Dubu Jeyuk comprised steamed dubu + pork belly + kimchi, all okayish though kinda boring.  But I could appreciate that everything was made with care, by hand, on the premises.

Nevertheless, we enjoyed the meal.

The stage adaptation of School of Rock, based on the Jack Black movie, is on a world tour, currently in residence at the Seoul Arts Center since January 12, ending on March 12.

At long last, on the final weekend, we got around to seeing the show.

SAC, as seen from the parking lot of the restaurant.
The show was in the Opera House.

Hit and miss.  The parts correlating to the movie, especially those featuring the kids, were great.  But the additional scenes created for the musical – just to extend the running time to a full 3 hours – were totally lame, especially those featuring the teachers.  The final number “School Daze,” performed by the cast, was electric, better than the movie, totally worth the price of admissions.

“Kick some ass!!”
