Because Koreans believe that everyone is already one year old when they’re born (supposedly to account for the time in the womb), we had celebrated my father’s 80th birthday last year (see also 15.196 Shrimp & Fluke Ceviche in Mustard Oil), when he had in fact turned 79. Today was his 80th birthday, as it would be recognized everywhere else in the world.

Whenever we have dinner at Jumbo Seafood, W and DJ like to go shopping in the mall, either before or after, though I always opt to take a seat at On the Border (right next door) and enjoy a drink or two, or five. The margaritas, starting at 15,900, offer a Melt Down option of adding extra shots, up to 2 shots, each 3,500 (compared to straight-up shots starting at 9,000 each) – deal! Comes with free tortilla chips + salsa. I might be tempted to have a taco someday.

While everyone else put themselves to the trouble of donning plastic gloves and hacking through shells to get at bits of crabmeat, I enjoyed a hassle-free plate of lobster on my own.

Previously, I had anticipated that this ginger and scallion version would offer more flavor than the simpler superior broth version (see for comparison 15.357 Lobster Braised with Superior Broth) – while the scallions were nicely seasoned and fragrant from the ginger, I was disappointed to find that the lobster underneath was kinda bland. Next time: Pao Fan.
