Deep-Fried Sea Bass

4.0

at Minmoc

-Seongsu, Seongdong, Seoul, Republic of Korea-

with SIS alumni

Minmoc is a Korean/Pan-Asian restaurant.  The menu mostly comprises modernized versions of traditional Korean dishes, with a few Chinese/Japanese inspired items.  Pricy but not exorbitant.

Located 530 m from Hannam intersection.

The occasion was dinner with SIS alumni, organized by HYM in her capacity as alumni relations director at SIS.   4 of the 7 attendees were from my year (Class of 1991), including me, HYM, HSK, DP, 2 from the year below us (Class of 1992), including JC and JW, and 1 a bit older (Class of 1988?), DC, who had left SIS before I came on board.  It was fun, though I’m already on relatively close terms with most of the people in the room (looking forward to getting chummy with DC, really nice guy but more important former head of Goldman Sachs and current head of Hyundai Capital – hello, summer internship, DJ).

Russian Jack Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc (2024) (2.5): explosively fruity, to the point of being a caricature of the stereotypical sauvignon blanc from the region.

The deep-fried sea bass was amazing.  Perfectly crispy, perfectly seasoned with a delicate yet punchy Cantonese-ish soy-fish sauce garnished with scallions + ginger + chilies + cilantro.  I could eat it every day with a bowl of jasmine rice.

Mala Chicken (3.0): just the right amount of spice.
Bossam (2.0): dry, somewhat bland.

While the other dishes were hit and miss, I look forward to a return visit.
