Lazy Wonton Soup is an American-Chinese dish.  Simply a deconstructed version of the classic Cantonese wonton soup: minced pork with aromatics (i.e., what would be the filling of a wonton) is made into small meatballs and tossed into a simple stock on their own, then wonton skins added separately.

I was inspired to make it by the Allrecipes YouTube channel, hosted by Nicole McLaughlin (see 5 Lazy One-Pan Dinners for When You’re Too Tired to Cook) – who, incidentally, is my current favorite online food creator.

While the recipe calls for 1 lb of pork (see Lazy Wonton Soup), I used 250 g and halved the other ingredients.

Absolutely amazing.  Took maybe 15 minutes from start to serve.  Tasted legitimately Cantonese.  Though originating in America, supposedly, I’m sure that home cooks in Hong Kong do this kind of thing.

Wonton skins were like thin silky noodles.

Unfortunately, I got to enjoy one bite before it all went to shit.  IZ took one look at the bowl and declared, “This looks disgusting.”  Which, of course, is an unforgivably rude thing to say at the table, especially to the person who’d cooked it.  But more important, I was utterly shocked that he would have to be told as much.  Makes me wonder what he says to others when outside the house, like in the school cafeteria during lunch.  Also disappointed in myself, realizing that he’s picked up on the criticism, sarcasm, outright vitriol that I sometimes apply when discussing certain foods – to wit, GMTD – though it’s never directed at the cook.  Anyway, I lost my appetite, got up from the table, and threw away the rest of my soup.

So, the future of this soup in this household remains uncertain.
