La Jjajang Mien
3.0

Hot on the heels of yesterday’s post, in which I griped about not-particularly-distinct variations of jjajang myeon, I present here an entirely-distinct variation: la jjajang mien. Presumably, the “la” and “mien” are related to the same Chinese root characters that comprise “ramen,” which means “pulled (ra/la) noodles (men/mien),” though the noodles here were strictly standard. The sauce was a spicy red concoction that, perhaps owing to its color and texture, seemed to taste a bit like arrabiata tomato sauce. According to the menu, it’s supposedly authentic Chinese jjajang. When I inquired as to the ingredients, the manager curtly replied that it was a proprietary secret. Regardless, it was pretty good and certainly different.
