Making hayashi rice, I tried a powdered sauce base by Ottogi, the only thing available at our neighborhood supermarket.
As expected – Ottogi is a huge operation that mass produces a little bit of everything, though not very well – the sauce had an unpleasant artificial aftertaste. But the kids liked it.
As a petty act of patriotism, the term “hayashi” and any reference to the sauce’s Japanese origins are absent from the packaging, which is labelled “ha-ice,” presumably a portmanteau of “hayashi + rice.”
