In a surprise announcement on Tuesday evening, supposedly to flush out so-called “black money,” the Indian government declared that all 100 ($1.50) and 50 ($.75) rupee notes, the highest and most circulated notes, would be demonetized as of midnight.
About $300’s worth, now worthless — fortunately/unfortunately for me, nowhere to spend it anyway. But many of the delegates, who’d exchanged all of their money into rupees upon arrival, were essentially bankrupted overnight, without means of paying for their hotels or food (not everyone has credit cards, and not everywhere accepts credit cards).
