In New Delhi. Here to attend the 7th Conference of the Parties (COP7) to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control — the most important tobacco meeting in the world, held every other year, last time in Moscow (COP6) (see most recently 5.285 Red Mullet Fillets …) — Monday thru Saturday.
In a surprise announcement on Tuesday evening, supposedly to flush out so-called “black money,” the Indian government declared that all 100 ($1.50) and 50 ($.75) rupee notes, the highest and most circulated notes, would be demonetized as of midnight.About $300’s worth, now worthless — fortunately/unfortunately for me, nowhere to spend it anyway. But many of the delegates, who’d exchanged all of their money into rupees upon arrival, were essentially bankrupted overnight, without means of paying for their hotels or food (not everyone has credit cards, and not everywhere accepts credit cards).
Your posts are making me want to order Indian food and garlic butter naan. But Baltimore doesn’t have the best Indian food….
