With IZ more frequently left on his own after school these days, he’s been learning to prepare simple snacks/meals for himself.

His most ambitious dish so far is gyeranbap, which can be tricky because it requires frying eggs in hot oil.

A telltale sign of his growing confidence is how close he gets to the skillet in crack the egg – early on, he was so skittish by the oil spatter that he would crack the egg from much higher, which actually results in more spatter.

Getting home late from work, after everyone else had eaten, I noticed the ingredients for gyeranbap still on the counter and asked IZ to please make me one.

IZ: “Why should I?”

Me: “So that you may continue to live.”

I often say to both of them: “If you can fry an egg, you’ll never go hungry.”

It was excellent.  Much better than his mom, who tends to overcook the eggs (see for example 11.226 Gyeran Bab).
