Suwon Wang Galbi

3.0

at Cheonggiwa Town

-Yonggang, Mapo, Seoul, Republic of Korea-

with TZ Layton and his family

In the afternoon, I met up with author TZ Layton (not his real name) during his visit to Dulwich College.

The Academy won the Morning Calm Medal for best elementary chapter book in 2024.

Cheonggiwa Town is a Korean restaurant.  Specializes in grilled beef (Korean BBQ).  Franchise, currently 29 locations.

Located 25 m from RYSE Hotel, literally next door.

Afterwards, I drove him back to his hotel and hosted dinner for him and his family.  The food was good.  The company was amazing.

Surprisingly empty, as I’ve seen other locations packed to capacity.

The origin of marinated beef short ribs – yangnyeom galbi – is often attributed to the city of Suwon.  However, galbi served in Suwon are typically cut shorter across the bone, providing narrower strips of meat, in contrast to wider “wang” style found here.

Layton’s son ate 4 portions by himself (this is 2 portions).

Too busy chatting to take proper pictures of the food, I was more intrigued by the noodle and rice dishes, which I will return to try and document on the blog.  Stay tuned.
