Dinner Omakase

4.0

at Woommage

-Changgok, Sujeong, Seongnam, Gyeonggi, Republic of Korea-

with W and IZ

Following our first experience at Woommage (see generally 16.051 Dinner Omakase), I’d been looking for a reason to return – so to celebrate IZ’s 14th birthday tomorrow, there we were.

All Hanwoo 1++.
1. Beef Tartare (4.0): caviar, rösti.
Truffles are notoriously difficult to store properly, and go stale quickly even in the best of conditions.
As before, the chef made a big deal about shaving black truffles, but they had almost zero truffle flavor.
6. New York Strip (chaeggeut) (3.5): ankimo, laver.
9. Deungsim (ribeye) (4.0): red wine jus.
10. Cheeseburger (3.5): brioche bun, American cheese – the 4th half on the house!
11. Banpsang (3.5): doenjang guk.
12. Mulberry (odi) Sorbet (3.0) + 13. Vanilla Ice Cream (3.0)

The meal was amazing.  Totaling 45.5 points, averaging 3.5 over 13 dishes – exactly the same score as the prior visit.  But I preferred certain dishes from last time, such as the ramyeon jjambbong (the spicy broth cutting through the fattiness of the beef) versus the cheeseburger (way too heavy to finish off the meal) – first world problems, I know.  Worth 120,000 a head, probably not, but a reasonable relative value compared to the exorbitant prices of “omakase” these days.

We’ll come back for a final visit after DJ returns, before the move to Oksu, even though the menu isn’t due for a revision until the fall.

Cheesecake this time (IZ prefers macarons).

Happy Birthday, Momo!
