In addition to hydroponics (see 14.228 Caprese Basil), I am now a dirt farmer as well.  Upon purchasing Thai basil from the supermarket, which came with roots attached, I’d potted them in soil (14.223 Pad Gaprao).  I also propagated the original stock by cutting a few of the longer stems, placing the tips in water for a few days until roots began to form, then potting them in soil.  Both the parent and its babies are thriving.
