16/12/7

Over the course of 16 days, through a combination of personal and professional travels, I will be in 12 localities across 7 countries, eating and documenting at least 1 meal in each of them.

Today is Day 9 /  Locality 8 / Country: n/a.

(For additional posts, see 16/12/7.)

Served as an amuse-bouche, within minutes of takeoff, the smoked salmon salad was quite good – the word “lovely” came to mind – pairing nicely with the Perrier-Jouet Champagne, a very auspicious beginning to the meal to come.
They say that business class travel leaves a larger carbon footprint due to the weight of all the porcelain (plates), glass (glasses), and stainless steel (silverware) – okay, maybe, but let me enjoy it for now.
Shrimp with Mixed Mushrooms (2.5): light and fresh, but kinda bland.
Mushroom Rice with Soy-Chili Sauce (1.5): pretty much as it looks, just steamed rice with bits of chopped mushrooms.
Better than whatever was being served back in coach, presumably, but lacking in the sophistication that I was hoping to get in business.
Side dishes (1.0): garlic stems + anchovies & chilies -would’ve preferred a single plate of good kimchi.
Cheese and fruit – I didn’t partake.
Carrot cake and ice cream – I didn’t partake.

Mission to Fiji + Personal Deviation (Day 1 of 8)

In transit, on my way to Fiji via Korea.  Wednesday to Thursday, I’ll be in Suva with a WHO team to facilitate a government workshop on strengthening laws to address noncommunicable diseases.  On the weekend, I’m staying a couple extra days on my own dime to go diving.

Ramyeon with Bean Sprouts (2.5): I suspect this might be cup ramyeon with bean sprouts and scallions added, available upon request as a midnight snack, pretty good after a few/many drinks.

According to duty travel protocols for officers of United Nations agencies, one-way flight time in excess of 9 total hours entitles the officer to a business-class ticket.  The general idea is that long haul travel is too

The trip from Philippines to Fiji requires approximately 15 hours – e.g., either via Incheon or Hong Kong, 4 hours to Incheon + 10 hours Nadi + 1 hour to Suva.  So I get to fly business class, thank you very much, my first business class duty travel.

On Korean Air, business class is branded as “Prestige Class.”  They could call it “Ass Class,” and I’d be just as thrilled.

Bulgogi (2.0): for breakfast; infinitely better than a typical omelette.

I could so get used to this.

Thank you.
