In Incheon.  Here to supervise a book fair this week at CI, my second one at this school (see previously 13.337 Veggie Sweet Potato Hamburger Steak).  As with last year, given the work load and distance from home, I will be staying in a hotel for the duration.  This time, I will be joined by HK, our IRIS focal point.

CI Spring 2023 Book Fair (Day 0)

We finished set-up this afternoon; the event starts tomorrow morning.

HOTEL

The Landmark is a hotel/apartment building.  Units are owned as homes by private individuals or managed as rentals by various hotel companies, some of which don’t even maintain a lobby within the premises.

Located 2.3 km from the school.

I found purchased 2 rooms on Expedia: one operated by The November Stay in Landmark and the other by Landmark Songdo Stay.  Both were around 230,000 won for 4 nights.  A quick visual comparison of the rooms suggested that they’re exactly the same size and configuration, differing only in furniture and amenities.

DINNER

Frank Burger is an American restaurant chain.  Specializes in burgers.  Established 2019 in Korea, currently 537 stores around the country.

More of a takeout counter than a full-fledged restaurant.

While vehemently opposed to the proliferation of chain restaurants in Korea, I’m less concerned when the food itself is amenable to the franchise model – mass pre-production + packaging and distribution + on-site assembly – such as American fast food.

The rooms are “residences” outfitted with washing machines and kitchenettes, which are nice because they include plates and silverware.

Too tired to go out for a proper meal – HK also wanted to stay in – I just got a shrimp burger and a couple other items to go and ate them in my room.

Unfortunately, the room doesn’t include a table (there’s a desk-like alcove built into the wall but no chair).

The shrimp burger was quite good.  Squishy bread, properly grilled.  Crispy shrimp patty, properly deep-fried.  Fresh tomato and lettuce.  Tangy sauce.  Infinitely better than McDonald’s (see for comparison 6.042 Double Deluxe Shrimp Burger).
