Roast Duck Noodle Soup

4.0

at Dim Dimsum

(Parnas Mall – COEX)

-Samseong, Gangnam, Seoul, Republic of Korea-

solo

Dim Dimsum is a Chinese restaurant chain.  Founded 2010 in Hong Kong, currently 6 restaurants in Korea.  Specializes in dimsum, as well as Cantonese barbecue.

Located in B1 of Parnas Mall, adjacent to Hyundai Department Store, part of the COEX complex.

Passing by on prior occasions, the lines were always too long for me to drop in for a quick taste.  At noon, the reservation kiosk estimated a waiting time of 60+ minutes; even at 3pm, 30+ minutes.

Curiously, some of the tables were empty, even with customers waiting outside in line.

Today, I had a business in COEX, which I’d deliberately scheduled for mid-morning so that I could have an early lunch at Dim Dimsum, no matter how long the wait.

Arriving at 11:26, I was seated at 11:51.

I am thrilled to report that Dim Dimsum is, both in character and in spirit, an authentic Chinese restaurant serving classically Cantonese dishes (see for comparison 13.007 Sauteed Egg with Crab Meat) at reasonable prices (see for comparison 14.047 Dimsum Hahaha).  Dim Dimsum is only the 4th such restaurant that I know of in Korea, along with Din Tai Fung (see 3.202 Xiaolongbao), Crystal Jade (see 13.189 Sautéed Egg Noodle with Seafood & Assorted Vegetable in XO Sauce), and TimHoWan (see 14.064 Abalone Pork & Shrimp Dumplings).

Shrimp Dumplings (3.5): best skins that I’ve experienced on hargao in Korea, ever.
Rice Flour Rolls with Shrimp (3.5): along with hargao, I always order cheungfun to gauge a restaurant’s dimsum skills (not that I’m qualified to judge).

The roast duck noodle soup was fantastic.  The broth was rich and deep in chicken flavor, enhanced with a dollop of chili oil.  The egg noodles – imported from Hong Kong – were delectably chewy and savory.  Most important, the roast duck was juicy and tender and perfectly seasoned, and generous in portion.  Best rendition of the dish that I’ve had in recent memory, perhaps in the history of GMTD.

Beautiful.

Shockingly, although roast duck noodle soup is (probably) my favorite dish of (probably) my favorite cuisine, GMTF has featured it only once (see 2.033 Roast Duck Noodle Soup), and once mentioned it in passing (see 5.182 Steamed Shrimp Dumplings).
