The biggest news to hit GMTD in recent memory, certainly since our return to Korea in 2020: Jumbo Seafood has opened up shop in Korea!

Located on L3 of IFC Mall.

Originally from Singapore, Jumbo Seafood is one of my favorite restaurants in the world.  It’s been featured twice on the blog, both to high acclaim (see most recently 10.155 Chilli King Crab; see also 8.098 Deep-Fried Mini Buns with Chilli Sauce).

The dining area opens more broadly towards the rear.

Just in time for my birthday (tomorrow), we were fortunate to snag a last-minute reservation during the busy end-of-year restaurant season.

1 type of lobster (Boston), 6 styles, all of which I’m keen to try.

I like to think of lobster as my birthday thing, although it’s only been featured once on the day of (see generally 8.357 Lobster with Mushrooms and Noodles in Truffle Sauce).

2 types of crab (only dungeness available tonight), 3 styles, 2 of which we tried tonight (chili, black pepper).

From the first bite, I knew that Jumbo would become my favorite non-Korean restaurant in Korea.   My dish of choice, Lobster Braised with Superior Broth, was exquisite: sweet and tender meat, draped in an elegantly subtle if slightly bland sauce – though frankly, I would’ve liked a bit more flavor, e.g., Cantonese-style with ginger and scallions (see for example 10.229 Lobster Stir-Fried Ginger & Spring Onion).  Everything else on the table was also great, including 3 crabs and other dishes, though I won’t show them in this post in anticipation of future visits.

16,000 won per 100 g x 600 g (only 1 size available tonight) = 97,000 won
Leftover superior broth, with bits of roe – when the server tried to clear the plate, I nearly took her head off.
With steamed rice, which didn’t seem to be pure jasmine, but fluffier than Korean rice.

We will be back in February, on the occasion of W’s birthday.

Bought the black pepper and chilli packets – stay tuned.
