Recipe: spread mayo on white sandwich bread + slice SPAM into 2 thin pieces + grill SPAM in frying pan + beat egg in round bowl with flat bottom about 8 cm in diameter + microwave egg on high until cooked + place SPAM, 1 slice of cheese, egg between bread + microwave sandwich on low for 20 seconds until cheese is fully melted and bread is softened.

This is one of the first things that my mother taught me to cook (see also 8.183 Neoguri Ramyeon), back when I was a latchkey kid growing up in California.  She called it “breakfast sandwich.”  I often made it as an after-school snack.

Never fails.

  1. Curious as to why you use the microwave, rather than frying the egg and grilling the sandwich, since you already have a pan to wash anyway.

    Maillard reaction FTW 😀

    1. i never thought to question the technique. now that i think about it, i kinda like the artificiality of the microwaved egg, kinda like something from mcdonald’s.

actually, maybe the original version didn’t involve grilled meat, just a slice of ham perhaps. which would make more sense, not sure if my mom wanted a 4th grader to be frying things by himself.

not sure what you mean by maillard reaction – i know what it is, but nothing here would seem to apply – unless the SPAM?

  2. I meant to point out that by choosing the microwave rather than pan frying, you’re missing out on opportunities for further deliciousness enhancement. Pan frying the bread and egg would certainly result in formation of maillard reaction products, due to the presence of proteins and reducing sugars under high heat, hence the browning. Maybe slightly less healthy than microwaving, but that’s a moot point considering the composition of the sandwich

    1. you’re totally right that maillard would improve certain parts of the sandwich.

but the point of this was how a kid could quickly make a snack for himself.
