Kaisendon

3.0

at Gogeup Obok Susan

(Andaz Hotel)

-Sinsa, Gangnam, Seoul, Republic of Korea-

with the Family

Having accomplished 2 of 3 venues yesterday on our food tour (see generally 17.222 Boss Bibimbap), we spent the night at the cabin and headed back to Seoul in the afternoon.

LUNCH

But first, we enjoyed for an early lunch what is probably my favorite dish in Korea, perhaps in the world – not just any dubu jorim, this dubu jorim at this restaurant. 3 of 3 venues, fully accomplished.

Dubu Jjim (4.0): never not perfect (see most recently 15.345 Dubu Jjim).
Banchan (3.0)

DINNER

Gogeup Obok Susan is a Japanese restaurant.  Specializes in kaisendon and other rice bowls with seafood.  Despite appearances, it is not part of a franchise chain.

Located in B1 of the Andaz Hotel, next to Sichuan House (see generally 14.353 Fujian Rice Bowl).

Kaisendon is a Japanese dish.  A type of donburi consisting of sliced sashimi over steamed rice; similar to chirashi, where the fish is usually cubed and scattered over vinegared rice.

Not really my thing – I much prefer chirashi, because of the rice.

After dinner, we watched The Odyssey at CGV.  I thought that the movie, like the book (I read the Penguin Classics version, translated by EV Rieu), was supremely overrated.  The protagonist and so-called hero Odysseus, though heralded as a cunning/brave/fierce leader, is a whining dumbass who gets all of his men killed along the way and returns home by himself.  Though the movie drops certain plot points from the book, like where he spends 1 year screwing around with Circe plus 7 years with Calypso – in other words, the 10-year journey should’ve been only 2 years.  Not a profound work of art, as everyone says it is, not even a decent adventure flick – to our credit, nobody in our family liked it.
