Mission to Korea + Personal Deviation : Day 5 (see previously 7.175 Chicken Curry).

Arrived in Seoul on Saturday morning.  Hung out at home over the weekend.  Attended a planning meeting at the National Assembly yesterday. Flew back to Manila this evening.

TEKASM (Try Every Korean Air Special Meal).  Flying often as I do on Korean Air, I’ve grown weary of the standard food offerings, certainly the bibimbap (see most recently 7.025 Bibimbap), even the meals on business class (see most recently 7.039 Sauteed Cod Fillet).  Recently, I discovered that Korean Air offers a range of “special meals” available upon advance order.  I’ll attempt to try every one, 20 in all.  Though anticipating that the food won’t be all that special, it’ll be about the exploration, better to be surprisingly blah than predictably meh.

Experts perhaps in nutrition, but certainly not food. If they knew anything about food, they wouldn’t dare to hope that anyone could possibly enjoy a meal as crappy as this.

The Low Fat Meal — rice and chicken thigh with mushrooms and broccoli in tomato sauce — was crap.  Utter lack of creativity, utter lack of sense, utter lack of flavor.  Shameful, this is the best that the national carrier vying to be among the top service airlines in the world, from a country vying to be among the top culinary cultures in the world, could manage.

Just occurred to me that bibimbap may in fact be the ultimate low fat meal.

7 down, 13 to go — this is without doubt the lamest project in the “Try Every” series; I am considering cancellation.

Not even experts in nutrition, as suggested by the use of chicken thigh meat, which in itself contains more fat than any other cut (wings have more fat with skin on); also, contrary to what the general description of the Low Fat Meal on the wrapping above would imply : “thick” gravies are typically thickened with flour or other starch, which isn’t fatty; most shell fish are relatively low in fat (and more importantly high in protein); processed cheese contains less fat than most natural cheeses; ham can be very low in fat (though high in sodium).

Oil is a type of fat.

  1. 7 out of 13 with many reddish indications…i think you suffered enough…i (maybe other readers) suffered enough from reading that you suffered. i vote for cancellation for world peace and happiness!

  2. with that mandate from loyal fan EK, I will cancel TEKASM.

however, please be prepared for 2 more posts… which are just as bad, so I probably would’ve cancelled then anyway.

  3. Oh gross. I’ve seen all of your plane meals and they all seemed “edible”, but this looks really bad. I work in medicine and work in a major hospital in the US, and hospital food looks way better than this.
