Jidan Saewoo Bokkeum

Ryeogi

2.0

-Changgok, Sujeong, Seongnam, Gyeonggi, Republic of Korea-

with W and IZ

While my favorite kind of dish is a Chinese stir-fry involving seafood and scrambled eggs, this dish fits the bill in name – “jidan (egg)” + “saewoo (shrimp)” + “bokkeum (stir-fry)” – but the execution fell far short of expectation.  The eggs were mushy and bland.  The shrimp were slippery and bland.  The vegetables, including bits of cooked cucumbers, were crumbly and bland.  Made palatable, just barely, when doused in chili oil + soy sauce.  Incidentally, it’s the cheapest plated dish on the menu (i.e., not counting noodle or rice bowls) at 25,000 for a small portion (tangsukyuk, typically the cheapest item on Korean-Chinese menus, is 27,000).

My collection of Chinese (and Singaporean-style Chinese) restaurant dishes featuring egg with seafood:

Frankly, I don’t like Ryeogi, but W and IZ refuse to dine in at Shanghai (“We can eat Shanghai at home.”).  By now, I should know well enough not to order a plated dish – in fact, their noodles and rice bowls are quite nice – but I dunno why I can’t seem to resist (see most recently 15.341 Eohyang Donggo).

Around 20:30, by which time all the customers (except us) had cleared out, the staff sat down for their family dinner in one of the private dining rooms, even though the restaurant was still open (closes at 22:00) (and we were still eating).
Everything, especially the pork stir-fry in the middle, looks better than anything that I’ve had at the restaurant (photo taken with permission).
